BAREILLY: An 80-year-old woman was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her son-in-law, who was a Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) jawan, in Phoolbehad area of Kheri district 17 years ago.
The court of ADJ Devendra Nath Singh on Thursday found Nisaar Jahan guilty of setting Aqeel Ahmad, 28, on fire with the help of other family members. Three accused in this case were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Nisaar's daughter, who was the wife of the victim, was also an accused in the case but she has been absconding since 2008. ADGC Sanjay Singh told TOI, "The accused thrashed and then set the victim on fire inside the kitchen of the house."
Following a complaint by the victim's brother, Khaleel Ahmad, seven people were named in the FIR and a chargesheet was filed against six people in court, as the victim's wife, Shaheen alias Rinki, was never found. During the trial, two of the accused - Nisaar's husband Ehteshaam Khan and son Aslam -- passed away.
The other three other accused, including Nisaar's other son Javed, his wife Nasreen and Aslam's wife Zeba, were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
As per complaint, Aqeel was married to Shaheen in 2005. In Sept 2007, Shaheen was accidentally burnt while sitting near a bonfire and her two-year-old son suddenly jumped at her. Aqeel ensured Shaheen received the best treatment, but her behaviour towards him turned cold after the incident, said Khaleel in his complaint.
"On Feb 6, 2008, my brother called me from his in-law's house and said he was being forced to divorce his wife. Later in the evening, I received a call from Aqeel and he said that he was getting death threats from the in-laws. Sometime later, police called me to inform that my brother was killed in a cylinder blast," said Khaleel in his police complaint.
Based on Khaleel's complaint, an FIR was registered under IPC sections 302 (murder), 504 (criminal intimidation) and 147 (rioting).
