NEW DELHI: At a time when caustic rumours and speculations are rife in social media against HC judges, CJI-designate B R Gavai promised that as the next CJI he would strive to provide leadership and long-term vision for the institution of judiciary.
A week before taking oath as the 52nd CJI, Justice Gavai quoted former CJI N V Ramana and said, "The role of CJI calls for leadership and long-term vision for the institution. The duties of the CJI are not limited to the Supreme Court but extend to the entire judicial system across the country. I assure Justice Ramana that I as CJI will follow his words of wisdom and guidance." The CJI-designate was speaking at the release of Justice Ramana's book 'Narratives off the Bench: A Judge Speaks' on Wednesday. Justices Surya Kant and Viram Nath also spoke fondly about nurturing of judiciary and judges by Justice Ramana, who was CJI from Apr 24, 2021 till Aug 26, 2022.
To assuage feelings of HC judges facing a barrage of rumours and speculations in social media, Justice Ramana said CJI and SC judges have a moral and institutional duty to look after all judges. Just as elders offer guidance, protection, and encouragement, SC must ensure that the judges feel supported and secure in their roles, he said adding, "When the rank and file of judiciary are assured that the highest judicial institution stands firm to safeguard their rights and redress their grievances, they are less likely to seek support from other sources such as political and executive powers."
The former chief justice of India said it was imperative for the higher judiciary to lead the institution with care and compassion while nurturing a judicial culture rooted in dignity, integrity and solidarity.
CJI-designate Gavai said Justice Ramana's tenure as the chief justice of India would always be remembered for administering oath of office to nine judges from different parts of the country as judges of the Supreme Court on Sep 1, 2021.
For the first time in the history of Supreme Court, three women judges took oath and one of them (Justice B V Nagarathna) would become the first woman CJI after Justice Vikram Nath demits office as CJI.
