NEW DELHI: Govt approved on Wednesday a national mission for self-sufficiency in pulses which will be implemented over a six-year period, from 2025-26 to 2030-31, with a financial outlay of Rs 11,440 crore.
The mission seeks to expand the area under pulses by an additional 35 lakh hectares to reach 310 lakh hectares by 2030-31 by targeting rice fallow areas and other diversifiable lands, supported by promoting inter-cropping and crop diversification .
It is expected to increase production from 242 lakh tonne achieved in 2024-25 to 350 lakh tonne, and raise yield to 1,130 kg/ha by 2030-31. The mission follows the 2025-26 Budget announcement. At present, domestic production has not kept pace with demand, leading to a 15-20% increase in pulse imports .
