In an unexpected incident, a cow wandering through a crowded neighbourhood in Pune ended up climbing to the third floor of a residential building while trying to escape a pack of stray dogs. The incident, which took place in the Ravivar Peth area, led to a tense few hours for residents who woke up to chaos and confusion inside their wada-style home.
Around 6 a.m. on Friday, a jersey cow was spotted running through the lanes of Ravivar Peth, chased by a group of stray dogs. In a panic, the cow tried to escape and ended up entering an old wada– a traditional building known for its narrow staircases and wooden flooring.
According to fire department officials, the scared cow climbed up a narrow wooden staircase and reached the third floor. Residents were stunned to find the large animal stuck upstairs, unable to come down on its own.
Locals initially tried to calm the cow and guide it downstairs, but the narrow wooden staircase made it too risky– both for the animal and for those trying to help. After several failed attempts, the residents decided to call the fire brigade for help.
“Chased by stray dogs, a jersey cow entered the premises and climbed up to the third floor on a narrow wooden staircase,” a fire official said, confirming the sequence of events, as reported by PTI.
When the fire brigade reached the spot, they checked the building and where the cow was stuck. Since it wasn’t safe to bring the cow down the stairs, they used a mechanical solution. A crane was called in, and the cow was safely strapped in a harness before being gently lifted and brought down to the ground.
“The cow could not be brought out from the staircase. As a last resort, we used a crane and safety belts to get it out safely,” the official added, as reported by PTI.
The incident quickly grabbed attention on social media, with rescue videos being widely shared. It also sparked fresh talks about the rising number of stray dogs in cities and the safety risks they pose for both people and animals. While the cow was not hurt, the incident left many locals worried and pointed to a bigger issue– the growing conflict between city life and street animals.
