BENGALURU: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Wednesday said India is witnessing a rapid rise in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, calling the shift “amazing to watch.”
“What’s happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity—India is outpacing the world,” Altman posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The remarks come amid a sharp uptick in usage of OpenAI’s tools in India, particularly following the viral popularity of a new image-generation feature that renders user-submitted photos in the style of Studio Ghibli animations. The feature was introduced as part of a broader product update for ChatGPT last week.
According to Reuters, ChatGPT saw record usage after the rollout, with over 150 million weekly active users and a reported one million users added in a single hour.
The spike in traffic has also led to performance issues, with OpenAI warning of temporary rate limits and potential delays in new product launches. Altman acknowledged the challenges, stating that the surge in usage would “cause stuff to break,” and that the company is working to address capacity constraints.
India has emerged as a major market for OpenAI, with its user base expanding rapidly among creators, students, and professionals using generative AI tools for content creation, translation, and visual design. OpenAI’s latest updates, including enhanced image generation capabilities and improved multi-modal performance in ChatGPT, are part of its effort to widen use cases across global markets.
