Mangaluru: Mangaluru South sub-division ACP Dhanya N Nayak is leading an inquiry into allegations against a former Ullal police station inspector accused of illegally recovering an additional 50g of gold in a theft case.

The incident dates back to June 28, 2024, when a complaint was filed regarding a gold theft at a residence in Ullal. During the investigation, then inspector Balakrishna detained a PUC student, two minors, and three of their friends. Gold ornaments were recovered during the operation.

On March 13, the mother of one of the accused approached city police commissioner Anupam Agrawal, alleging that inspector Balakrishna engaged in corrupt practices and cheated her. Following a preliminary inquiry, the commissioner handed over the case to ACP Nayak for a detailed investigation.

According to the complainant, she was called to the station the day after her son was taken into custody and was asked for money. She claimed she agreed to the demand. Before her son was produced in court, police allegedly allegedly seized around 50g of gold that he was wearing. The inspector reportedly assured her that the gold would be documented in the chargesheet and returned through legal procedure.

However, the woman now claims that the seized gold was not mentioned in the chargesheet submitted to the court.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, commissioner Agrawal confirmed that an investigation is underway. "Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry," he said.
