60-yr-old held in Sribhumi for 'raping' specially-abled woman

Silchar: A 60-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 20-year-old specially-abled woman in Sribhumi district on Thursday.

The survivor belongs to a scheduled caste community. The incident triggered tension in this area.

The accused took advantage of the survivour being alone at home, allegedly raped her, locked her in the toilet and fled the scene. On Upon returning home, her mother heard her daughter's cries and learned of the incident.

Following this, locals, along with the police, began searching for the man and managed to arrests him from a neighbouring village by the evening.

As the news spread, members of Hindu organisations arrived in the village, leading to a tense situation. "The audacity, with which someone walks into a village, where there are higher number of SC members, and carries out such nefarious crime is baffling," BJP leader Sipra Goon said.

At one point, senior police officials from Sribhumi headquarters arrived to bring the situation under control. Eventually, the accused was arrested by the police.

"The person was absconding but we acted promptly. He is in our custody and the medical examination of the girl is being done in Sribhumi civil hospital. If found guilty, we would take the strictest action," SP (Sribhumi) Partha Pratim Das said.
