NEW DELHI: Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has put up posters across Chennai in support of party chief Kamal Haasan over his recent remark on the origin of Kannada language, stating that “truth needed no apology”.
The posters appeared ahead of a meeting by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, which will decide on the release of Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life. Some pro-Kannada groups have objected to his comments and demanded an apology before allowing the film’s release in Karnataka.
The controversy started when Haasan said, “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” during the audio launch of Thug Life in Chennai in late May. The remark sparked protests in Karnataka. However, the South India Artistes’ Association defended Haasan, saying his intention was to promote unity.
Despite the backlash, Thug Life is scheduled for release on 5 June. Haasan has declined to apologise for “uttering the truth” and has approached the Karnataka high court seeking permission for the film’s release.
