ROURKELA: Months after helping his father secure bail for his grandmother's murder, some 16 years back, a 22-year-old man allegedly killed him on Sunday night to avenge her death and to prevent him from harassing women in the village. Bishnu Barma hit Kranti Kumar Barma (60) on the head with an iron pipe, resulting in his death.

The incident was reported from Bhalupatra village under Brahmani Tarang police station limits. Bishnu was arrested on Monday evening. Police have seized the iron pipe from his possession.

According to the police, Kranti had been serving a life term for murdering his mother in 2009. He was released on bail on Dec 26, 2024. Since his release, he had allegedly been terrorizing villagers, often harassing women and frequently clashing with his son.

On Sunday night, following an altercation over his conduct, Bishnu allegedly struck his father on the head with the iron pipe, killing him on the spot. He then dumped the body in a roadside bush. His body was discovered on Monday. During questioning, police found that father and son used to frequently quarrel over the former's conduct.

"Accused son has been arrested for killing his father," said Nitesh Wadhwani, Rourkela superintendent of police. Wadhwani said Bishnu had deposited the bail bond for his father and he himself is now an accused.

Kranti was arrested on April 11, 2009 for killing his mother. He had asked his mother for food and when she asked him to wait, Kranti got angry and in a fit of rage hit her with a chopper, killing her. Kranti was sentenced to life on Oct 28, 2009.
