There is a stunning UK market town you should have on your radar, full of independent shops and great pubs. The UK is home to some lovely market towns that are a hit with visitors from across the country and abroad. However, some of them fly under the radar, despite having a lot on offer for any passing through or deciding to stay for a couple of days. One of them is Beccles, which you will find in Suffolk.
Beccles is a stunning little market town that looks inviting in the autumn and winter months, complemented nicely by fallen golden leaves. It is a relatively small place, home to just over 10,000 residents according to the most recent census data. Beccles is a glorious little town with plenty to do, and it is surrounded by some seriously stunning scenery, thanks to its location in the southeast of England, close to the coast. Beccles perhaps flies under the radar because it is close to popular towns such as Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth and Aldeburgh.
Despite it being an underrated spot, there is a lot to attract you there. The official tourism board for the East of England lists Beccles as one of the areas where tourists don't tend to go, despite the amount it has to offer.
"In the heart of the Waveney Valley on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, Beccles is a thriving market town with a growing community of local independent shops and eateries," it says. "It's also one of the fastest-growing market towns in the country, with great rail links and close proximity to the seaside and Norwich."
Among the things to do in Beccles is Beccles Lido, which is a popular spot for locals in the summertime. However, there is still a lot to do even when the weather gets colder.
There is also the Beccles and District Museum and the Hundred River Maize Maze. But its independent shops might be the main draw here.
Beccles' independent shops include Beccles Books, Vintage Mischief, Auburn Boutique, Parlour Made and Blyburgate Antiques. Meanwhile, there are plenty of lovely cafes to visit here.
They include Old School Coffee, Paws for Tea, Spindlers and Fen Lane Deli. If you are looking for restaurants for lunch or dinner, then you should head to spots like Ristorante Piatto, Oak Fired at the Royal Oak and Easytiger Beccles.
Additionally, Beccles has a great selection of traditional British pubs. Go-to spots in this stunning market town include the Butcher's Arms, The Old Tap Beccles and The Ingate.
Locals have quite positive things to say about Beccles. On Reddit, one person said that it was one of the best towns to live in the UK. The Reddit user wrote: "Beccles, Suffolk is a good spot.
"Small enough to be picturesque and homely yet still has good infrastructure, a choice of a few decent sized supermarkets plus Norwich is only 30-40 minutes away."
