Team Europe can today secure a historic defence of their Ryder Cup title on American soil having already built a record-breaking lead over Team USA. The Europeans head into Sunday's singles leading 11.5-4.5 despite a hostile reception for the likes of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry at Bethpage Black in New York.
Luke Donald's team have won all four sessions so far to take the biggest lead in Ryder Cup history into the singles matches. McIlroy, Lowry and co. were subjected to vile verbal abuse during Saturday's fourballs, so much so that the PGA of America had to add extra security during the afternoon matches to cope with the heckles. A first tee emcee quit her job after leading vile chants against McIlroy while the Northern Irishman's wife was subjected to abuse herself at the 18th hole. Team Europe regardless won another three points which means they need just 2.5 points to retain the title today and three to claim victory.
