Dehumidifiers will work more effectively if you do a 10-second task once in October

Moisture tends to build up in homes during the colder months as we are hanging our laundry indoors while keeping windows closed, and this lack of airflow will cause condensation. Condensation is when hot humid touches a cold surfaces, which cause moisture to begin building up on a surface. If this moisture goes unnoticed it can quickly cause mould growth which can lead to peeling wallpapers, damaged window frames and can trigger some serious health problems.

The absolute best way to keep your home mould-free is with a dehumidifier, but Alexander Bevan, an expert from Morris Direct, has shared the device might not work properly if you are placing them in the wrong area of your home. Alexander said: "Many UK homeowners have discovered, randomly placing your dehumidifier in a room may not effectively control humidity. You may still battle high humidity, and your dehumidifier will work twice as hard to get the job done."

One of the biggest mistakes people make is placing a dehumidifier is the corner of a room, as the lack of airflow reduces its ability to suck up humidity.

This means it will take more time and energy to work effectively, which can increase your electricity bill and leave central areas untreated, which can allow mould to spread.

If you want a dehumidifier to work properly, then it needs to be placed at least 30 centimetres away from a wall or object on all sides.

Making sure there is plenty of space around a dehumidifier helps the vent remain unblocked and have plenty of airflow, so it can quickly filter out any excess moisture in a home.

However, if you want to get the most out of a dehumidifier, then the absolute best place to have it in a home is in the hallway.

Alexander said: "A rule of thumb is to always place your dehumidifier close to the source of moisture. This will reduce running time and increase how efficiently the appliance is in regulating high humidity.

"For smaller spaces, a great hack is placing a dehumidifier in the hallway, which is often the most central place in the house."

Hallways are connected to several rooms and tend to have the better air circulation than the rest of a house so can draw in more moisture from the air from multiple areas at once.

There also tends to be fewer obstructions like furniture or curtains in a hallway so it will simply be more effective so you do not have to have it switched on for a long period of time.

Taking just a few seconds to place your dehumidifier in the best spot can help keep your home dry and cosy throughout autumn as well as save you money on energy bills.
