A British man has died after falling from his race bike in Spain. Witnesses said the man, who has not been named, was not hit by a car but instead fell from his bike while riding up a hill on the Costa Blanca.

The incident took place on Mediterranean Avenue in the area of Gran Alacant, just south of Alicante, on Friday morning, September 26. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead. Local reports suggest he may have suffered a sudden medical episode, but an investigation has been launched.

As reported by the Daily Mail, pictures show Civil Guard officers removing the bike from a grassy bank at the side of the road. It is not yet known whether the man was on holiday or lived locally.

In April, a British cyclist lost his life while taking part in a race in Majorca. Tributes flooded in for 39-year-old Phillip Williams, who fatally fell in the race.

A police investigation was launched to determine whether his injuries were caused from veering off the road and crashing into the railings, or if it was related to a prior health issue that caused the fall.

His death was announced by Hannah Fawcett from Liverpool Braveheart Cycle Club. She said: "It is with great sadness I write that our club mate Phil Williams tragically died following a fatal accident in the Majorca 312 yesterday.

"Phil will be deeply missed by us all. An exceptional bike rider with so many outstanding achievements and a wonderful person too. Phil joined the club just two years ago to join us in some longer 'social ' rides as he was building back fitness.

"For us Phil's 'social' pace was nothing but, however his kindness and generosity meant he would be calmly waiting at the top of the hills, or just sit on the front of the group pulling us along at our pace on the flatter bit."

She added: "Always messaging to say thanks for the ride afterwards. Phil was a team player; just a few Weeks ago, Phil rode out to support our club 10-mile TT. After a while it was clear it was far too cold to stand around in cycling kit.

"Phil cycled home, got changed and drove out to continue to support, right until the end to get the result sorted and gazebo down."
