Barclays has said it will be contacting customers about payments they will be receiving.

The update came after a customer contacted the bank over social media, as they had heard that payments of £50 and £100 were going out as an offer of compensation after service outages in January.

first asked the person if they had logged a complaint about being affected by the outage. The individual responded to say they had sent the bank a direct message about the matter.

The bank then said: "If you've made a complaint regarding our IT issues on January 31st, we'll be proactively contacting you with our response and, where appropriate, compensation.

"If you were impacted and haven't received any communication from us, you can get in touch."

Those who get an amount paid in their account will see the reference 'Barclays UK Refu' for the payment.

Barclays said it has sent out letters in the post to people to tell them how much compensation they will get. One person said they had received a payment for £600 while other said they had been paid £50.

Nationwide Building Society customers are also receiving payments, as a thank you gesture, after the group completed its purchase of Virgin Money.

The payments started going out this week with more than 12 million people to receive the funds. Asked when the payments would be made, Nationwide said: "We plan to make payments to the current account, instant access savings account, and limited access savings account by April 30, 2025.

payments will also be made by April 30, 2025. We plan to send cheques by May 14, 2025."

Individuals who don't have one of these accounts and have a with Nationwide will receive the £50 into the bank account you use to pay your direct debit.
