The actor shared the news on social media, reposting the official announcement from the film's Instagram account which featured a clapperboard image and the caption: "And we're rolling - It's a Wonderful Day 1 on set."
McDonough's casting was announced alongside several other famous names as Jimmy begins production, reports the Express.
Christopher McDonald of Happy Gilmore 2 fame will play Hollywood star Lionel Barrymore, while Chicago Fire's Kara Killmer is set to portray Lady Julia.
Comedy actor Rob Riggle will take on the role of US Army Colonel Terrill, and Jemma Donovan will play Hollywood icon Ginger Rogers.
Currently being filmed in West Cork, Ireland, the movie is directed by Aaron Burns.
Burns expressed his excitement about the project this week, stating: "There is something special about the way our amazing cast has immediately connected deeply with our story and with one another.
"Being in Ireland allows us to have the feel of England in the 1940s, and with our beautiful costumes and sets, I feel like we've stepped back into Jimmy Stewart's world."
The previously revealed cast also features Jason Alexander as Louis B. Mayer, Max Casella as Frank Capra, Sarah Drew as Hedda Hopper, Julian Works as Second Lieutenant Martinez and Jen Lilley as Gloria Stewart.

The picture will chronicle Stewart as he navigates Hollywood stardom throughout the 1940s before joining the US Army Air Corps during the Second World War.
Writer Justin Strawhand remarked: "Jimmy lived the lives of a hundred men, with courage and conviction.
"Working with Aaron, our producing team, and our incredibly talented cast and crew to bring his story to screen is the privilege of a lifetime."
One of Stewart's daughters, Kelly Stewart-Harcourt, serves as an executive producer.
Jimmy does not yet have a release date. Yellowstone is available to stream on Paramount+.
