Who is Harry Amass? Ruben Amorim hands Man Utd teen first Premier League start at Newcastle

Manchester United head coach has been willing to give youngsters their chance this season, and Harry Amass is set to become the latest beneficiary. The young left-back will make his first start against after impressing for the Under-21s.

Amorim has given minutes to the likes of Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi since taking charge in November. Academy graduates and Toby Collyer have also continued to feature after making their debuts under Erik ten Hag, and now it's the turn of Amass.

The 18-year-old joined United from Watford's academy in the summer of 2023. He was just 15 years old when he made the Hornets' bench for an game in January that year, but left without making a senior appearance for the club he joined as a nine-year-old.

Amass worked his way through the ranks, playing for United's Under-18s and Under-21s last season and making the bench for a number of senior games . Among those was the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry, where Amass was an unused substitute in the dramatic penalty shoot-out victory.

and has made the bench for several more Premier League and games, finally making his senior bow as a substitute in the Premier League win at in March. The youngster, who turned 18 on the day of his debut, was an unused sub for the last two league games against and as well as the Europa League draw away at Lyon.

“It’s an incredible experience,” Amass said after his senior debut. “I’m just proud at the moment and I think my family will be proud of me, everyone watching at home. I’m just grateful for the opportunity and hopefully there’s many more to come.

“It all just fell on the right day, with the 18th birthday, so it’s not a bad one, is it? When I found out I was very excited. I was warming up down there and got the nod and that’s when it was real.”

While waiting for his opportunity at club level, Amass has risen through the ranks for England. He was part of the England Under-17 side which reached the quarter-finals of last year's European Championships, and has since racked up seven appearances at Under-18 level.

He captained the Under-18s for the first time in March as the Young Lions claimed a 1-0 win against Portugal. United team-mate Jack Fletcher, who has made several Premier League squads this season without making it onto the pitch, was another member of the starting XI for the win.
