Jamie Vardy: Update on Leicester legend's future issued by Ruud van Nistelrooy

Ruud van Nistelrooy says he's in the dark over summer plans. said that discussions over extending the forward's contract are ‘on-going’ but that he has no idea if the veteran striker will be playing for him and next season.

Vardy, now 38, is nearing the end of the 12-month extension he agreed last summer. It is clear that van Nistelrooy holds the club’s captain in high regard. But he has no idea if he will stick around to spearhead the club’s assault on the Championship next season.

Asked about the contract situation, he said: “Every player’s situation is being looked at - and that’s important. With Jamie, it’s an ongoing thing between him and the club. So far, he’s kept his own counsel.”

Vardy has struck seven goals in a team that has been battered from pillar to post in under the former Dutch striking ace.

Two victories from 19 games has pushed the Foxes but the manager has no issues with how Vardy has captained the side.

He said: “He’s a great captain. He’s been through thick and thin with this club. Winning the League, , Charity Shield, promotion and relegation. He’s been doing everything he can to help the club and be loyal to this club.

“Just seeing him, he’s an example to everyone in the building and an inspiration of consistency, of mentality, of never giving up.

“We see it on a daily basis in training. It’s hard when you care and things are not going how you want. But what stands out and where we have a common ground is that you keep fighting and keep going until the end.

“That’s a great example. He leads. And it’s his way of living in this profession and I’m the same.”
