"Everyone at extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course. Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James' Park on Sunday, supported by the club's first team staff."
Howe , and although long-time assistant Tindall said that the 47-year-old was struggling, he did expect him to be well enough to take his place in the dugout for the clash with Ruben Amorim's Red Devils.
"He's been really poorly the last couple of days in bed," said Tindall on Friday. "We've been in daily contact. We've been speaking three or four times a day so it's not affected any of the preparations. We've still got a couple of days and I'm sure he'll be fine for the weekend."
Howe, who missed his first match in charge of Newcastle in 2021 when suffering from Covid, is a hero on Tyneside after he guided Newcastle to their first major domestic trophy in 70 years when they beat 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Newcastle will go into the game against Manchester United in seventh place in the table, seeking a win that will strengthen their chances of qualification.
On the game, Tindall said: “We’re in a position that we would have wanted to be in with eight games remaining, competing for Champions League places.
“The result (against ) the other night means there’s an extra place, so five teams from the Premier League, but then there are a lot of teams that are fighting for those positions.
“We’ve got a busy week coming up, but the most important thing is we just focus on the Manchester United game and making sure that we prepare right for that.
“That’s all we are in control of and if we can go and deliver a performance against Manchester United and get the result that we want, it takes us one step closer to where we want to get to.”
