New Delhi, April 10:
Following the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana to India, former IPS officer and ex-Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi has called for heightened and modernized security measures to handle the high-profile terrorist.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Bedi emphasized that while Indian jails like Tihar have previously housed hardened criminals, separatists, and terrorists, Rana's case carries international implications, demanding a more advanced security approach.
"I would suggest solitary confinement, high-security confinement, inter-agency monitoring, and AI-based surveillance if possible," Bedi said, recommending a strict and technology-driven approach to prevent any breach.
She also highlighted the need for extraordinary precautions during Rana’s movement and trial, suggesting measures like:
- Fake armed convoys for transportation
- Virtual court trials
- Rigorous background checks of all personnel involved
- Fortification of courtrooms
“Technology-based infrastructure is the need of the hour”“India’s prison infrastructure needs modernization to meet global standards,” she added.
Bedi stressed the importance of coordination between intelligence, legal, and correctional systems. She called for strategic foresight and technology-based infrastructure to handle such sensitive national security matters.
Background:Tahawwur Rana, an accused mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed 166 people, was brought to India from the United States after a prolonged legal battle. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested him formally upon arrival in New Delhi.
The extradition is being hailed as a significant diplomatic and legal success. While BJP leaders have termed it a diplomatic victory for the Modi government, the opposition has praised the efforts of NIA, also demanding further action against Hafiz Saeed and other Pakistan-based terrorists.
Rana’s trial is expected to draw national and international attention in the coming weeks.
