Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed that an urgent meeting be held with the National Textile Corporation (NTC) to expedite the process of providing housing to mill workers in Mumbai. Emphasising the sacrifices made by mill workers for the city, Shinde stated that ensuring housing for them in Mumbai is a top priority for the government.

The direction was given during a meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House, where a delegation of mill workers met with the Deputy CM to discuss housing-related concerns. Shinde assured the delegation that the government is committed to making maximum housing available for the workers, not only in Mumbai but also across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

“The government is sincere in its efforts to provide homes to mill workers in Mumbai. A meeting with NTC will soon be convened to determine how much land can be made available in the city,” Shinde said. He also highlighted that 15,870 homes have already been allotted to mill workers and that nearly one lakh workers who are eligible will be provided homes in due course.

Shinde also acknowledged the concerns raised by some union representatives about the high cost of houses in areas like Shelu and Vangani. He assured that discussions would be held with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar to explore the possibility of reducing housing prices in these areas.

Additionally, he encouraged mill workers to consider housing options within the MMR region, noting that the state government has been strengthening infrastructure and improving connectivity in those areas.
