Veteran singer Kumar Sanu is back in the news, this time for the wrong reasons. In an explosive interview with Film Window, the ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam’ singer’s ex-wife, Rita Bhattacharya, alleged she was “tortured” by the singer and his family and that the singer’s attitude completely changed when he tasted monumental success after the songs of the 1990 blockbuster ‘Aashiqui’ became chartbusters.
Tales Of Torture
Rita opened up about her troubled past, recalling how her marriage with Kumar Sanu was far from what the outside world believed. According to her, the singer was deeply insecure and imposed strict restrictions on her freedom. She alleged that he would not allow her to step outside the house, leaving her feeling isolated and trapped within her own home.
The situation, as she described, became even more complicated when Kumar Sanu’s sister moved in with them. Rita revealed that his sister left behind her own husband and children to live in their household, creating a dynamic that Rita found unsettling. What disturbed her most was the arrangement of their living spaces—while Rita would sleep separately with her own children in one room, she claimed that Kumar Sanu’s sister would share a room with him.
She alleged that they did not let her eat and would often lock the kitchen up when they left. She also claimed that after a point, they stopped milk supply for her kids and also told the pediatrician that they can’t pay him any more money.
“ Ghar se jab bahar jaate toh kitchen ke shelves lock kar dete (they used to lock the kitchen). I bought a handful of rice and then cooked khichdi at my sister-in-law’s home,” she said.
“They tortured me as much as they could. And I couldn't do anything because I was pregnant…” she added.
Embroiled In Legal Troubles
Rita revealed she was pregnant when Sanu dragged her to court, alleging cruelty. “I used to feel so sleepy sometimes when I was pregnant; sometimes I used to vomit at the court,” she said.
She also claimed that the singer threatened her through gundas (hooligans) so that she would divorce him for ‘free.’
A Tumultuous Marriage
Rita also alleged that Sanu had affairs when she was pregnant.
Rita first crossed paths with Kumar Sanu in Calcutta, where their connection soon blossomed into romance. Defying the wishes of their families at the time, the two decided to marry in the late 1980s, choosing love over parental approval. Although the wedding initially lacked the blessings of their elders, both sides eventually came to terms with their union. Over the years, the couple welcomed three children, building a family together. However, their relationship could not withstand the test of time, and by 1994, their marriage had come to an end with a formal divorce.
