The Ministry of Culture has introduced a welfare initiative for senior artists, writers, and scholars across India who have significantly contributed to art, literature, or cultural heritage. Known as the Scheme for Financial Assistance for Veteran Artists, this program provides eligible beneficiaries with a monthly pension of up to ₹6,000. The aim is to offer financial stability, dignity, and social security to elderly artists who may be facing challenges in their later years.
Objective of the SchemeThe central idea behind this pension scheme is to recognize the lifelong contributions of artists and ensure that they can live a respectable life even after retirement or reduced work opportunities. Many senior artists, despite having dedicated decades to cultural fields, often struggle financially in old age. This initiative bridges that gap by offering consistent support.
Pension Benefits Under the Scheme-
Eligible beneficiaries receive ₹6,000 per month as financial assistance.
-
The pension is jointly shared between the Central Government and State Governments/Union Territories.
-
The Central Government contributes up to ₹5,500 per month, while the state or UT must contribute a minimum of ₹500 per month.
-
If a state already provides pension support, the central contribution is adjusted accordingly.
-
In the unfortunate case of the artist’s death, the pension may be transferred to the surviving spouse, as per government provisions.
To apply for the Veteran Artists Pension Scheme, applicants must meet the following conditions:
The applicant should be a senior artist, writer, or scholar with a notable contribution in their respective cultural or literary field.
Traditional scholars without published works but with recognized contributions may also apply.
Applicants must be at least 60 years old (except in the case of a surviving spouse applying after the death of the artist).
The applicant’s gross monthly income should not exceed ₹4,000, or ₹48,000 annually.
Beneficiaries should not already be receiving financial aid under any other central or state government pension schemes.
Applications can be submitted both online and offline:

Why This Scheme MattersThis pension scheme goes beyond just financial support—it acknowledges the dedication of artists who enriched India’s cultural legacy. It provides them with security, dignity, and respect in their senior years, ensuring they are not left behind after their years of contribution.
By blending recognition with economic assistance, the Veteran Artists Pension Scheme 2025 becomes a crucial step in empowering India’s senior artists, giving them the assurance of a stable livelihood and the honor they deserve.
